Pacht and Steigman

Anna’s family — Câmpulung, Vatra Dornei, Rădăuți and Czernowitz

Papi’s mother, Chaya Reizel — Anna, Ana in Brazil — was born at Vatra Dornei (Dorna Watra) in the Bukovina mountains on 22 April 1900, a daughter of Jacob Pacht and Scheine Ruchel Steigman. Both her 1952 São Paulo card and her 1959 Brazilian naturalization decree give her parents’ names. She married Zeidi in Cernăuți in 1924, lived in Tel Aviv from 1939, came to New York in 1948 and to São Paulo in 1952, where she was a vice-president of the Ozer women’s society. She died in Brooklyn in November 1978 and is buried in Bnei Brak beside Zeidi.

Her father, Jacob Pacht, was born at Câmpulung Moldovenesc on 5 January 1865, a son of Yisrael Pacht and Ester Lea Schieber, and married Scheine Ruchel Steigman of Wiznitz at Dorna Watra on 11 May 1896. Their children were born at Seletin, Sadova and Dorna Watra. Scheine Ruchel, the daughter of Mottel Steigman and Malka Buller, died young, about December 1910. Jacob, a merchant of Rădăuți, perished in Transnistria in 1941–42; his son Shlomo, a watchmaker in Rădăuți, perished there in April 1942.

Anna’s other brothers and her sister made new lives far apart: Albert (Anshel) and Menachem Mendel in Palestine — Mendel, once a collector for the Jewish National Fund at Dorna Watra, died in Holon in 1967; Samuel in Tel Aviv, the “uncle Samuel Pacht” on Papi’s 1950 visa card; Dr Max Pacht, a physician at the Afula hospital; Israel in Paris; and Erna Schapira in Tivon. A 1967 family notice in Die Stimme names them together with “Anna Rosner, São Paulo”. Of Jacob’s own brothers and sisters, Mordechai Berl and Shmuel Yitzchak perished in Mogilev in 1942 and Rachel Hübner and her husband at Igești in June 1941.

Confirmed Anna’s São Paulo foreigners’ card, 1952: Ana Rosner, born 22 April 1900, daughter of Jacobo Pacht and Rachel Steigman.São Paulo foreigners’ registration cards (FamilySearch collection 2140223, record 1:1:QKD5-1DT6) — public record
