Newly found records

  • Mordko: his memorial record leaves his parents’ names blank; two 1939 reports call him “Abraham Rosner” (noted on his card and in the list of differing dates). New open leads: Feibisch Rosner (1875–1917) and Minna Rosner of Vilaucea (engaged 1930), both Possible; two Rosners checked and found not ours. Possible — memorial record 1051785 · Czernowitz press 1930, 1939 · casualty list 1917
  • “Uncle Sol” (Salo), Babi’s boss’s partner on Canal Street, was Papi’s older brother Joseph Solomon Rosner; he married Hedy Sonnenschein in New York on 24 Nov 1948 and lived at 619 Montgomery Street, Brooklyn. Likely — 1950 US census, Brooklyn ED 24-2696; US petition for naturalization no. 547160; Babi’s 2023 interview; the family booklet
  • Mordko: the later 1939 report naming him “Abraham Rosner” (aged 73) is Likely a press error; four earlier reports say Mordko. c.1869 is kept beside the age. Likely — Czernowitzer Morgenblatt and Deutsche Tagespost, Aug–Sep 1939 (DiFMOE)

Leads still being checked

These are possibilities only. They are not on the tree until a record proves them.

  • Zeidi named a brother, Yosef Rosner of 22 Weisel Street, Tel Aviv, on his 1948 US border card. He is not among the five children registered in 1921, so how he fits — a younger brother or a half-brother — is still open. Possible
  • A sixth child of Mordko Rosner, mentioned in a memorial record, is not yet identified. Possible
  • A 1941 list of Jews sent from Văscăuţi to Jaruga (Romanian government lists copied by the Holocaust Memorial Museum, RG-31.004M, reel 11) names a Mendel Rosner, with no age or parents. Mordko’s son Mendel is recorded as dying at Banila pe Ceremuș in 1940, so this may be another man; Possible only. An earlier list from Văscăuţi names Mina Schikler née Rosner, 33, daughter of Meier and Etti — a Rosner family of Văscăuţi not yet linked to ours. Possible

The Rosners of Vilaucea and Czernowitz

Zeidi, his parents and his brothers and sisters

Papi’s father, Yeshayahu Aryeh Rosner — Saie Leib on his papers, Zeidi to the family — was born on 28 January 1896 in Vilaucea (Willawcze, today Vilavche), a village on the Ceremuș in the Vyzhnytsia district of Bukovina. In 1921 the Jewish register of nearby Waschkoutz (Vășcăuți) entered, one after another, five children of Freide Reiner, all born at Vilaucea: Chaie (1894), Schaje Leib (1896), Brane (1898), Mendel (1904) and Mariem (1906). A note added beside Zeidi’s entry in 1927 records that Freide had married Mordko Rosner in a civil ceremony on 17 December 1925 and that he declared himself the father. Zeidi’s 1959 Brazilian naturalization decree names his parents as Marcos and Frida Rosner, and a 1994 sefer dedication calls him Yeshaya Aryeh ben Mordechai Simcha.

Zeidi married Anna Pacht in Cernăuți in 1924; their sons Joseph Solomon (1925) and Chaim (1930) were born there. In Czernowitz he made knitwear. On 23 January 1939 he was issued a Romanian passport, and on 25 April 1939 the family entered Palestine; they lived at 10 Zamenhoff Street, Tel Aviv, and Zeidi became a Palestinian citizen in 1942. In 1947–48 he followed his son to New York, where his 1948 border card calls him “Rabbi” and names his brother Yosef Rosner of Tel Aviv. In 1950 he led a small synagogue at 468 Crown Street, Brooklyn; from 1952 the family was in São Paulo, in business together as Rosner e Filhos. Zeidi died in Boro Park on 19 July 1990 and is buried in Bnei Brak beside his wife.

Zeidi’s father, Mordko, a farmer on his own farm at Vilaucea, a widower and the father of six, died there in July 1939, aged about 70. Of Zeidi’s brothers and sisters, Breina married Yehoshua Stieber of Gura Humorului; she, her husband and their son Yaakov perished in 1941–42. Their other children were Shlomo, Gitel (Tova) and Avraham. Mendel, a grain merchant of Banila pe Ceremuș, and his wife Berta perished there in 1940; they had one child. Miriam married Aizik Klein of Zadova; she, her husband and their son Iankele, aged seven, perished in Transnistria in 1941–43. Nothing later is known of Chaie.
