Pacht and Steigman

Anna’s family — Câmpulung, Vatra Dornei, Rădăuți and Czernowitz

Papi’s mother, Chaya Reizel — Anna, Ana in Brazil — was born at Vatra Dornei (Dorna Watra) in the Bukovina mountains on 22 April 1900, a daughter of Jacob Pacht and Scheine Ruchel Steigman. Both her 1952 São Paulo card and her 1959 Brazilian naturalization decree give her parents’ names. She married Zeidi in Cernăuți in 1924, lived in Tel Aviv from 1939, came to New York in 1948 and to São Paulo in 1952, where she was a vice-president of the Ozer women’s society. She died in Brooklyn in November 1978 and is buried in Bnei Brak beside Zeidi.

Her father, Jacob Pacht, was born at Câmpulung Moldovenesc on 5 January 1865, a son of Yisrael Pacht and Ester Lea Schieber, and married Scheine Ruchel Steigman of Wiznitz at Dorna Watra on 11 May 1896. Their children were born at Seletin, Sadova and Dorna Watra. Scheine Ruchel, the daughter of Mottel Steigman and Malka Buller, died young, about December 1910. Jacob, a merchant of Rădăuți, perished in Transnistria in 1941–42; his son Shlomo, a watchmaker in Rădăuți, perished there in April 1942.

Anna’s other brothers and her sister made new lives far apart: Albert (Anshel) and Menachem Mendel in Palestine — Mendel, once a collector for the Jewish National Fund at Dorna Watra, died in Holon in 1967; Samuel in Tel Aviv, the “uncle Samuel Pacht” on Papi’s 1950 visa card; Dr Max Pacht, a physician at the Afula hospital; Israel in Paris; and Erna Schapira in Tivon. A 1967 family notice in Die Stimme names them together with “Anna Rosner, São Paulo”. Of Jacob’s own brothers and sisters, Mordechai Berl and Shmuel Yitzchak perished in Mogilev in 1942 and Rachel Hübner and her husband at Igești in June 1941.

Latest finds in this line

  • Samuel Pacht’s wife’s mother, Male (Meli) Preschel, “wife of Seide Preschel of Dąbki”, died at Dąbki on 21 Jun 1896, aged 35 (record Confirmed; that she is Meli Korn Likely). Seide Preschel at Zastawna and Kriszczatek in 1909–11 — community board, a mill, a merchant (notices Confirmed; Likely him). The Pacht brothers’ firm in print as “Brüder Pacht” from Jan 1920 (Confirmed).
  • Feige Buller née Steigman’s own stone at Rădăuți: died 10 Mar 1933. Shimon Buller (son of Shlomo Yehuda, d. 1932) added as Malka’s brother (Likely) with his wife Rosa née Rosner (d. 1924); Witie Lea Buller added as a daughter of Schloime Leib and Gitel (Confirmed, index).
  • Chanze Klipper’s parents, Nute (Nathan) and Jetti Klipper of Wiznitz/Putilla; two more children of Shmuel Yitzchak and Chanze, Aharon (1886) and Bruche (1889–90).
  • Frații Pacht, the Pacht brothers’ shop at Hauptstraße 9, Czernowitz, 1922–29; Samuel Pacht’s 1919 engagement to Klara Preschel and his 1979 notice; Mendel’s widow Chana and brother-in-law Rav Salman Preschel — Likely two Pacht brothers married two Preschel sisters. A caution on Mendel’s card: an older Mendel Pacht lived at Dorna-Kandreny.
  • Rivka Pacht, “daughter of R’ Mordechai Dov” (d. 1976, Holon), moved off the tree to the open leads: her link to Mordechai Berl Pacht rests on the names only (Possible).
  • Malka Steigman née Buller confirmed from the Rădăuți cemetery register: died 9 Oct 1891 aged 48, born at Seletin. Three of her brothers and sisters added from their stones (Feige Rudich, Hersch Tzvi Dov, Asher Antshil).
  • Ten Pacht and Perschel stones at Holon read from the burial society register’s photographs. Albert (Anshel) and his wife Rivka share one stone: “Anshel ben R’ Yaakov” and “Rivka bat Yosef”, so Albert is Jacob’s son (now Confirmed).
  • Two Rivkas: Albert’s wife is Rivka bat Yosef (d. 1986). A second Rivka Pacht, “daughter of R’ Mordechai Dov” (d. 1976), had been mixed into her card; she is a Possible daughter of Jacob’s brother Mordechai Berl and is now listed among the open leads, not on the tree.
  • Samuel’s wife Chaya Tzirel, “daughter of R’ Chaim Dov Perschel” (d. 9 Aug 1968), and her sister Sprintza Kugler (d. 1976) added with their father. Yisrael Pacht (1902–1983), “ben Shmuel Yitzchak”, is Likely a son of Jacob’s brother Shmuel Yitzchak.
  • Mordechai Berl Pacht, Jacob’s brother: born at Câmpulung on 25 Feb 1867 (house 574), son of Israel and Ester née Schieber — Câmpulung birth register (index). A memorial record gives Feb 1868; both kept.
  • Anshel and Feige Steigman proven children of Mottel Steigman and Malka Buller; their families added.
  • Shlomo Pacht b. 9 Apr 1895, Poiana Stampei; m. Ester Schimmel 1922. Shmuel Yitzchak (b. c.1853) and Dvora (b. 1860) proven children of Israel and Ester.
